The gift and the curse

Like every other person on the planet, I'm obsessed with Givenchy by Riccardo Tisci.  The problem with the label under Tisci's game-changing direction, though, is that everyone so flips over those particular motifs and statement pieces - the Rottweiler T (f/w11), the gorgeous iris & black panther prints (f/w11, above), the bird of paradise everything (s/s12) - that they become almost cliché by the time the collection lands in stores.

It's an over-saturation: the initial runway show coverage; the lucky, well-photographed fashionistas wearing the collection almost immediately off the models' backs; the lavish editorials; the fabulous, star-studded ad campaigns.  The pieces become so recognizable, so this-season-Givenchy, so overly, overtly of the moment that it feels gauche - cheesy, even - to wear them by the time they hit stores; it feels like logomania.

But then there are the pieces that just look like distinctive perfection.  Recognizably Givenchy, yes, to the well-trained eye--but subtle, well-cut, a new idea.  There were some true stunners in Tisci's pre-fall collection: I see it in the lines and uber-luxe colorblocking on the coat in the top photo; in the cut of the skirt and the gorgeous juxtaposition of gorgeous prints in the photo below; the boot in both shots.

It's not just trends Mssr. Tisci is dealing in, but also focused thinking.

Always in Vogue

There's little chicer in my mind than standing up for worthy causes, women's rights always chief among them. January Vogue features the incomparable Meryl Streep on the cover and includes the story of her work as the chief spokesperson for the effort to create a National Women's History Museum in Washington, D.C.  Annie Liebovitz captured the core committee of powerhouse American women behind the effort in inspiring images taken in front of the U.S. Capitol.  You really must click to enlarge!

Included are, above from left, NWHM president Joan Wages, Secretary Madeleine Albright (the nation's first female Secretary of State), U.S. Senator Susan Collins (R-ME), U.S. Senator Barbara Mikulski (D-MD), Barbara Bush, Congresswoman Carolyn Maloney,  Patricia Nixon Cox, Dr. Maya Angelou, Congresswoman Eleanor Holmes Norton, and Streep.

It just so happens that I'm listening to Paul Simon's Graceland at the moment.  It just so happens that I also celebrated my birthday at Indochine (in late March), in somewhat less regal fashion, with candle-lit Momofuku birthday cake truffles.  It doesn't just so happen, however, that I've never come across party pictures more fabulous or more inspiring.  This is no "let's try to get in, I know the DJ" sort of party.  You work tirelessly for years, and maybe you're lucky enough to score an invitation to a dinner in honor of a true fashion legend.  Grace Coddington, 70 years young, always in Vogue.  We aspire.

Well stocked

I love these photos of the beautifully kept bar and fabulous match collection at the home of Kate & Andy Spade. I love to collect matches at the various restaurants and hotels I visit and like to think I have a similarly chic collection - though I should take his cue and display them on a tray!

Well said

I've long been a fan of the "precocious" Ms. Gevinson. I appreciate her idealism, because it's one some relic of which I hope to still have somewhere in my jaded, battered bag of bones. Her diatribe on the Terry Richardson issue is really quite on point, and I applaud her for writing it, especially given the combination of her spotlight and the early stage of her fashion career.

I don't find Terry's work particularly compelling. Glamorous people against a glistening, all-white background a fun picture make, of course. And he always delivers an appealing product for his corporate clients. And I'm sure there's some artistic value to some of his work. And I'm even willing to allow the notion that the visualization of his sexual desires carries with it an intended commentary on society every once in a while. But mostly, it's gross and abusive. Age of consent this, age of consent that, but it really comes down to artistic responsibility. What does consent really mean when an 18-year old girl, broke and desperate for a touch of fashion fairydust, finds herself in an aggressive studio and handed the option of "Appease the superstar photographer" or leave?

Dasha, I know you're reading - spread it!
